Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral disorder among children, with an estimated prevalence of 1.3 per 1000 in India. The nationwide lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the closure of schools for an indefinite period. After the reopening of schools, the lockdown period was feared to have caused a deterioration in symptoms of existing mental health conditions among school-going children. This field study aimed to probe the association of school closures due to lockdown with any change in symptoms of ADHD in aged 6-15 years in the largest tertiary care hospital in Kolkata. Methods: A longitudinal observational study was conducted involving 34 prediagnosed ADHD patients attending the Clinical Psychology outpatient department (OPD) of a tertiary hospital for follow-up. Data was collected by face-to-face interviews with the patients' parents using a predesigned, pretested structured study schedule. Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) was used to assess the ADHD symptoms. Results: Twenty-three (67.65%) patients were observed to have worsened ADHD symptoms after lockdown. Significant worsening was observed in the ADHD indicator and the mood disorder indicator. Significant contributing factors were rural residence, nuclear family, non-attendance at school, and knowledge inadequacy among parents. Conclusion: There was a significant worsening of symptoms of ADHD owing to the school closure due to the lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders among children. Pharmacotherapy has been the primary treatment for ADHD, supplemented by behavioral interventions. Digital and exercise interventions are promising nonpharmacologic approaches for enhancing the physical and psychological health of children with ADHD. However, the combined impact of digital and exercise therapies remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether BrainFit, a novel digital intervention combining gamified cognitive and exercise training, is efficacious in reducing ADHD symptoms and executive function (EF) among school-aged children with ADHD. METHODS: This 4-week prospective randomized controlled trial included 90 children (6-12 years old) who visited the ADHD outpatient clinic and met the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. The participants were randomized (1:1) to the BrainFit intervention (n=44) or a waitlist control (n=46) between March and August 2022. The intervention consisted of 12 30-minute sessions delivered on an iPad over 4 weeks with 3 sessions per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school) under the supervision of trained staff. The primary outcomes were parent-rated symptoms of attention and hyperactivity assessed according to the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham questionnaire (SNAP-IV) rating scale and EF skills assessed by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) scale, evaluated pre and post intervention. Intention-to-treat analysis was performed on 80 children after attrition. A nonparametric resampling-based permutation test was used for hypothesis testing of intervention effects. RESULTS: Among the 145 children who met the inclusion criteria, 90 consented and were randomized; ultimately, 80 (88.9%) children completed the study and were included in the analysis. The participants' average age was 8.4 (SD 1.3) years, including 63 (78.8%) male participants. The most common ADHD subtype was hyperactive/impulsive (54/80, 68%) and 23 (29%) children had severe symptoms. At the endpoint of the study, the BrainFit intervention group had a significantly larger improvement in total ADHD symptoms (SNAP-IV total score) as compared to those in the control group (ß=-12.203, 95% CI -17.882 to -6.523; P<.001), owing to lower scores on the subscales Inattention (ß=-3.966, 95% CI -6.285 to -1.647; P<.001), Hyperactivity/Impulsivity (ß=-5.735, 95% CI -8.334 to -3.137; P<.001), and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ß=-2.995, 95% CI -4.857 to -1.132; P=.002). The intervention was associated with significant reduction in the Metacognition Index (ß=-6.312, 95% CI -10.973 to -1.650; P=.006) and Global Executive Composite (ß=-5.952, 95% CI -10.214 to -1.690; P=.003) on the BRIEF. No severe intervention-related adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: This novel digital cognitive-physical intervention was efficacious in school-age children with ADHD. A larger multicenter effectiveness trial with longer follow-up is warranted to confirm these findings and to assess the durability of treatment effects. We provide here the first bottom-up review of the lived experience of mental disorders in adolescents co-designed, co-conducted and co-written by experts by experience and academics. We screened first-person accounts within and outside the medical field, and discussed them in collaborative workshops involving numerous experts by experience - representing different genders, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, and continents - and their family members and carers. Subsequently, the material was enriched by phenomenologically informed perspectives and shared with all collaborators. The inner subjective experience of adolescents is described for mood disorders, psychotic disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, externalizing disorders, and self-harm behaviors. The recollection of individuals' past histories also indexes the prodromal (often transdiagnostic) features predating the psychiatric diagnosis. The experience of adolescents with mental disorders in the wider society is described with respect to their family, their school and peers, and the social and cultural context. Furthermore, their lived experience of mental health care is described with respect to receiving a diagnosis of mental disorder, accessing mental health support, receiving psychopharmacological treatment, receiving psychotherapy, experiencing peer support and mental health activism, and achieving recovery. These findings can impact clinical practice, research, and the whole society. We hope that this co-designed, co-conducted and co-written journey can help us maintain our commitment to protecting adolescents' fragile mental health, and can help them develop into a healthy, fulfilling and contributing adult life.

Anxiety is common in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). The parent version of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS-P) is a widely used measure to assess anxiety across a broad range of childhood populations. However, assessment of the measurement properties of the SCAS-P in NDDs have been limited. The present study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the SCAS-P in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using Rasch Measurement Theory. Data from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders Network Registry were used in the analysis. Children (ages 6-13 years old) with a primary diagnosis of ADHD (n=146) or ASD (n=104) were administered the SCAS-P. Rasch Measurement Theory was used to assess measurement properties of the SCAS-P, including unidimensionality and item-level fit, category ordering, item targeting, person separation index and reliability and differential item functioning. The SCAS-P fit well to the Rasch model in both ADHD and ASD, including unidimensionality, satisfactory category ordering and goodness-of-fit. However, item-person measures showed poor precision at lower levels of anxiety. Some items showed differential item functioning, including items within the obsessive-compulsive, panic/agoraphobia and physical injury fears domains, suggesting that the presentation of anxiety may differ between ADHD and ASD. Overall, the results generally support the use of the SCAS-P to screen and monitor anxiety symptoms in children with ADHD and ASD. Future studies would benefit from examination of more severely anxious NDD cohort, including those with clinically diagnosed anxiety.

Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions which frequently co-occur. The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is commonly used to aid with diagnostic assessment of ASD but was not originally designed for use in those with comorbid ADHD. Visual attention to social stimuli has been often studied in ASD using eye-tracking, to obtain quantitative indices of how attention is deployed to different parts of a social image/scene. As the ADOS includes tasks that rely on attending to and processing images of social scenes, these measures of visual attention could provide useful additional objective measurement alongside ADOS scores to enhance the characterisation of autistic symptoms in those with ADHD. Methods: Children with ASD, comorbid ASD and ADHD, ADHD and Neurotypical (NT) controls were recruited (n=84). Visual attention was measured using eye-tracking during free viewing of social scenes selected from the ADOS. The full ADOS was then administered. Stimulant medication was temporarily withdrawn during this assessment. Research diagnoses were based on the Development and Wellbeing Assessment (DAWBA), ADOS, Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ, a measure of ASD severity) and Conners' Rating Scales (CRS-3, a measure of ADHD severity) following clinical consensus. Results: Using factorial ANOVAs to model ADHD, Autism and their interaction, we found that fixation duration to faces was reduced in those with ASD (ASD and ASD+ADHD) compared to those without ASD (ADHD and NT). Reduced visual attention to faces in the whole sample was associated with Autism symptom severity (SCQ subscale scores) but not ADHD symptom severity (CRS-3 scores). Discussion: Our findings provide preliminary evidence in support of implementing visual attention measurement during assessment of ASD in the context of comorbidity with ADHD. For example, if a child with ADHD was found to reduce attention to faces in ADOS pictures this may suggest additive difficulties on the autism spectrum. Replication across a larger sample would be informative. This work has future potential in the clinic to help with complex cases, including those with co-occurring ADHD and ASD.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the efficacy and safety of clonidine adhesive patch in Tourette syndrome (TS) patients with comorbid attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS: This study was conducted on a sample of children and adolescents with TS who had comorbid ADHD between May 2012 and March 2015. The patients were diagnosed according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition, and were randomly assigned to four different dose groups: 1.0 mg/week, 1.5 mg/week, 2.0 mg/week and placebo group, and the symptom was evaluated by Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale, Version IV (SNAP-IV) and Yale Global Tic Severity Scale scales every 2 weeks. The primary outcome was tic disorders (TD) effective rate at week 8. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-seven TS patients with comorbid ADHD in 2.0 mg/week (n=35), 1.5 mg/week (n=27), 1.0 mg/week (n=36) and placebo groups (n=29) were included in this subgroup analysis. The TD effective rate of the 2.0 mg, 1.5 mg, and 1.0 mg groups at week 8 were significantly better than that in placebo group (85.7%, 81.5%, and 86.1% vs. 20.7%, all p<0.0001). All groups demonstrated significant improvements in SNAP-IV total scale scores compared to baseline (p=0.0004), with treatment groups showing only a trend for better performance compared to placebo group at week 8, without statistical differences (22.1±15.41, 21.3±11.96, and 21.2±12.48 vs. 26.0±13.37, p=0.3385). A total of 9 adverse reactions occurred, all recovered spontaneously without additional medication. CONCLUSION: Clonidine adhesive patch could safely and effectively reduce the tic symptoms of TS patients with comorbid ADHD, and might be potentially helpful in the ADHD symptoms control.

Early motor delays and differences are common among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Yet, little work has shown whether there are early atypical motor signs that differentiate these groups. Quantitative measures of movement variability hold promise for improving the identification of subtle and specific differences in motor function among infants and toddlers at high likelihood for ASD and ADHD. To this end, we created a novel quantitative measure of movement variability (movement curvature) and conducted a preliminary investigation as to whether this measure improves outcome predictions. We used a wearable triaxial accelerometer to evaluate continuous motion-based activity in infants at high and low likelihood for ASD and ADHD at 12, 18, 24, and 36 months of age. At 36 months, participants were categorized into three outcome groups: ASD (n = 19), ADHD concerns (n = 17), and a comparison group (n = 82). We examined group differences in movement curvature and whether movement curvature is predictive of a later ASD or ADHD concerns classification. We found that movement curvature was significantly lower in infants with later ASD diagnosis at 18, 24, and 36 months of age compared to infants with either ADHD concerns or those in the comparison group. Movement curvature was also a significant predictor of ASD at 18, 24, and 36 months (AUC 0.66-0.71; p = 0.005-0.039) and when adjusting for high ASD likelihood at 18 and 24 months (AUC 0.90, p = 0.05-0.019). These results indicate that lower movement curvature may be a feature of early motor differences in infants with later ASD diagnosis as early as 18 months of age.

CONTEXT: Children born to mothers with gestational hypo- or hyperthyroidism may have increased risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, the effects of maternal thyroid status on offspring brain development are unclear. OBJECTIVE: To establish whether adolescent brain morphology is affected by suboptimal gestational thyroid function (SGTF). DESIGN AND SETTING: The Controlled Antenatal Thyroid Screening (CATS) study randomized mothers with SGTF to levothyroxine or no supplementation from ∼12 weeks' gestation. At age 9, children born to mothers who were over-treated with levothyroxine had a higher risk of conduct and hyperactivity traits. For the current CATS III study, children underwent neuroimaging studies, including T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PARTICIPANTS: A total of 85 children aged 11-16 years had usable T1-weighted MRI data (exposed to untreated SGTF (n=21), normal GTF (n=24), or treated SGTF (optimally-treated (n=21), over-treated (n=20)). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome: to examine the association of SGTF and its treatment with global brain volumes. Secondary and exploratory outcomes: to investigate the association of maternal TSH and free T4 levels with global and subregional brain volumes. Results were adjusted for age, sex and pubertal scores. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in global brain volumetric measures between groups, including total gray matter volume (p=0.373). Weak positive correlations were found between maternal TSH, but not FT4, levels and several brain volumes, but these did not survive testing for multiple comparisons. CONCLUSIONS: We found no evidence that SGTF was associated with differences in adolescent brain morphology, and no impact of levothyroxine supplementation.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to determine whether cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS, formerly sluggish cognitive tempo) has different external correlates relative to ADHD-inattentive presentation (INP), ADHD-hyperactive/impulsive presentation (HIP), and ADHD-combined presentation (CP). METHODS: Parents of a nationally representative sample of 5,525 Spanish youth (ages: 5-16, 56.1% boys) completed measures of CDS, ADHD-inattention (IN), and ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI) and other measures. Scores greater/less than the top 5% on CDS, ADHD-IN, and ADHD-HI were used to create control (n = 5,013, 90.73%), CDS-only (n = 131, 2.37%), ADHD-INP-only (n = 83, 1.50%), ADHD-HIP-only (n = 113, 2.05%), ADHD-CP-only (n = 48, 0.97%), CDS + ADHD-INP (n = 44, 0.80%), CDS + ADHD-HIP (n = 25, 0.45%), and CDS + ADHD-CP (n = 68, 1.23%) groups. RESULTS: Forty-nine percent of youth with clinically elevated CDS did not qualify for any ADHD presentation, whereas 64% of youth with clinically elevated ADHD did not qualify for CDS. The CDS-only group was higher than the ADHD-INP-only, ADHD-HIP-only, and ADHD-CP-only groups on anxiety, depression, somatization, daytime sleep-related impairment, nighttime sleep disturbance, and peer withdrawal, whereas the CDS-only and ADHD-INP-only groups did not differ on ODD (ADHD-HIP-only and ADHD-CP-only higher) and academic impairment (ADHD-CP-only higher than CDS-only and ADHD-HIP-only lower than CDS-only). The CDS-only group also had higher rates of anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder diagnoses than the ADHD-only group. CONCLUSIONS: A distinction was found between CDS and each ADHD presentation, thus providing support for CDS as a syndrome that frequently co-occurs with yet is distinct from each ADHD presentation.

The adult form of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has increasingly become a focus of adult psychiatry. Despite long-established diagnostic criteria and specific therapeutic approaches for the disorder, the common misconception that ADHD is a "fad" has persisted. Examining the history of psychiatry can make an educational contribution by showing that the adult form of ADHD is a continuously existing illness phenomenon. The present study examines the discussion of sometimes prominent authors about "chronic mania" in German-speaking psychiatry around 1900. The individual concepts were analyzed for their content and compared with each other and with modern diagnostic manuals for adult ADHD. The aim of this work is to question and discuss whether these "chronic-manic concepts" are part of the conceptual history of adult ADHD and whether a gap in the history of this disorder can be filled with their help. It is concluded that in the early twentieth century neurologists reported and discussed about patients who nowadays would almost certainly receive the diagnosis of ADHD. The psychiatrists had difficulty in classifying this disorder into their nosological schemes but their "chronic-manic concepts" show clear parallels to the current diagnostic criteria for adult ADHD and its symptoms.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has primarily been studied from a deficit-focused perspective. However, there are individuals with ADHD who exhibit resilience or a pattern of positive adaptation despite the risks associated with their diagnosis. The present study evaluated whether peer acceptance predicted resilience for adolescents with ADHD and if self-efficacy or a stress-is-enhancing mindset served as mechanisms of those relations. Participants included 113 comprehensively evaluated adolescents with ADHD (67% male) across three time-points (10th-12th grade). Mediation analyses revealed higher T1 peer acceptance significantly predicted higher resilience (ß = 0.24) 1.5-2 years later, with higher T2 self-efficacy (ß = 0.08) demonstrating a significant indirect effect of the association. A stress-is-enhancing mindset directly predicted resilience (ß = 0.15) but was not associated with peer acceptance nor mediated the association between peer acceptance and resilience. Present results are the first to provide longitudinal evidence for peer acceptance, self-efficacy, and a stress-is-enhancing mindset as important for promoting resilience among adolescents with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Incrementing numbers of patients treated for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) call for scrutiny concerning long-term drug-safety. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate associations between long-term use of ADHD treatment and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: Using nationwide registers, adult patients first-time initiated on ADHD treatment between 1998 and 2020 were identified. Exposure groups were prior users, <1 defined daily dose (DDD) per day, ≥1 DDD per day determined at start of follow-up, and 1 year after patients' first claimed prescription. Outcomes were acute coronary syndromes, stroke, heart failure, and a composite of the above. RESULTS: At start of follow-up, 26,357, 31,211, and 15,696 individuals were correspondingly categorized as prior users (42% female, median age: 30 years [Q1-Q3: 23-41 years]), <1 DDD per day (47% female, median age: 31 years [Q1-Q3: 24-41 years]), and ≥1 DDD per day (47% female, median age: 33 years [Q1-Q3: 25-41 years]), respectively. Comparing ≥1 DDD per day with prior users, elevated standardized 10-year absolute risk of stroke (2.1% [95% CI: 1.8%-2.4%] vs 1.7% [95% CI: 1.5%-1.9%]), heart failure (1.2% [95% CI: 0.9%-1.4%] vs 0.7% [95% CI: 0.6%-0.8%]), and the composite outcome (3.9% [95% CI: 3.4%-4.3%] vs 3.0% [95% CI: 2.8 %-3.2%]) was found-with corresponding risk ratios of 1.2 (95% CI: 1.0-1.5), 1.7 (95% CI: 1.3-2.2), and 1.3 (95% CI: 1.1-1.5). No apparent associations were found for acute coronary syndrome (1.0% [95% CI: 0.8%-1.2%] vs 0.9% [95% CI: 0.8%-1.0%]). CONCLUSIONS: Possible associations between elevated long-term cardiovascular risk and increasing dosage of ADHD treatment use in a young patient group should warrant further investigation.

BACKGROUND: In Mexico, this pioneering research was undertaken to assess the accessibility of timely diagnosis of Dyads [Children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their primary caregivers] at specialized mental health services. The study was conducted in two phases. The first phase involved designing an "Access Pathway" aimed to identify barriers and facilitators for ADHD diagnosis; several barriers, with only the teacher being identified as a facilitator. In the second phase, the study aimed to determine the time taken for dyads, to obtain a timely diagnosis at each stage of the Access Pathway. As well as identify any disparities based on gender and socioeconomic factors that might affect the age at which children can access a timely diagnosis. METHOD: In a retrospective cohort study, 177 dyads participated. To collect data, the Acceda Survey was used, based on the robust Conceptual Model Levesque, 2013. The survey consisted of 48 questions that were both dichotomous and polytomous allowing the creation of an Access Pathway that included five stages: the age of perception, the age of search, the age of first contact with a mental health professional, the age of arrival at the host hospital, and the age of diagnosis. The data was meticulously analyzed using a comprehensive descriptive approach and a nonparametric multivariate approach by sex, followed by post-hoc Mann-Whitney's U tests. Demographic factors were evaluated using univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses. RESULTS: 71% of dyads experienced a late, significantly late, or highly late diagnosis of ADHD. Girls were detected one year later than boys. Both boys and girls took a year to seek specialized mental health care and an additional year to receive a formal specialized diagnosis. Children with more siblings had longer delays in diagnosis, while caregivers with formal employment were found to help obtain timely diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest starting the Access Pathway where signs and symptoms of ADHD are detected, particularly at school, to prevent children from suffering consequences. Mental health school-based service models have been successfully tested in other latitudes, making them a viable option to shorten the time to obtain a timely diagnosis.

Previous studies have shown that aerobic exercise has beneficial effects on executive function in adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The underlying mechanisms could be partially due to aerobic exercise-induced cortical excitability modulation. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of acute aerobic exercise on executive functions and cortical excitability and the association between these phenomena in adolescents with ADHD. The study was conducted using a complete crossover design. Executive functions (inhibitory control, working memory, and planning) and cortical excitability were assessed in twenty-four drug-naïve adolescents with ADHD before and after acute aerobic exercise or a control intervention. Inhibitory control, working memory, and planning improved after acute aerobic exercise in adolescents with ADHD. Moreover, cortical excitability monitored by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) decreased after intervention in this population. Additionally, improvements in inhibitory control and working memory performance were associated with enhanced cortical inhibition. The findings provide indirect preliminary evidence for the assumption that changes in cortical excitability induced by aerobic exercise partially contribute to improvements in executive function in adolescents with ADHD.

Time-series data collected from a network of random variables are useful for identifying temporal pathways among the network nodes. Observed measurements may contain multiple sources of signals and noises, including Gaussian signals of interest and non-Gaussian noises, including artifacts, structured noise, and other unobserved factors (eg, genetic risk factors, disease susceptibility). Existing methods, including vector autoregression (VAR) and dynamic causal modeling do not account for unobserved non-Gaussian components. Furthermore, existing methods cannot effectively distinguish contemporaneous relationships from temporal relations. In this work, we propose a novel method to identify latent temporal pathways using time-series biomarker data collected from multiple subjects. The model adjusts for the non-Gaussian components and separates the temporal network from the contemporaneous network. Specifically, an independent component analysis (ICA) is used to extract the unobserved non-Gaussian components, and residuals are used to estimate the contemporaneous and temporal networks among the node variables based on method of moments. The algorithm is fast and can easily scale up. We derive the identifiability and the asymptotic properties of the temporal and contemporaneous networks. We demonstrate superior performance of our method by extensive simulations and an application to a study of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), where we analyze the temporal relationships between brain regional biomarkers. We find that temporal network edges were across different brain regions, while most contemporaneous network edges were bilateral between the same regions and belong to a subset of the functional connectivity network.

RESUMO

People experience life and interact with others in many ways. The term 'neurodivergence' refers to variations from what is considered typical. Research and education into conditions that cooccur with neurodivergence are essential in shaping clinicians' approaches to people who may present with a wide range of symptoms. Neurodivergence may influence a person's style of communication, learning, attitudes, and behaviour, and they often experience inequity and rejection. This review highlights the huge burden of cooccurring conditions carried by neurodivergent women and girls whose medical issues have largely gone under the radar. We suggest how clinicians might increase their awareness of diagnosis and management of their problems with mutual benefit.

INTRODUCTION: Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) represents a significant public health burden. ADHD is often comorbid with many other psychiatric disorders, with a high co-occurrence with depression. However, there is a paucity in our understanding of the potential impact of treating patients' ADHD on their depressive symptoms. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effect of treating adult ADHD on comorbid depressive symptoms without directly administering treatment for depression in an integrated behavioral health clinic in the primary care setting. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review between April 2021 and May 2022 on adult patients treated in the Primary Care Adult Integrated Behavioral Health Clinic at an urban family medicine residency clinic. For patients with ADHD, we administered the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1) to serve as a marker of ADHD symptom burden and the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to serve as a marker of depressive symptom burden. We administered the questionnaires prior to initiating ADHD treatment and again at the three-month follow-up visit. The ADHD treatment included pharmacotherapy and brief psychological interventions targeted at ADHD. We compared the ASRS scores and PHQ-9 scores at baseline and after three months to determine whether ADHD treatment had any impact on PHQ-9 scores. RESULTS: At baseline, the average ASRS score was 11.3 and the average PHQ-9 score was 8.25. Comparing scores after three months of intervention to the initial scores, our preliminary results demonstrated a trend of improvement in both ASRS and PHQ-9 scores. A total of 75% (n=24/32) of the patients had an improvement in ASRS scores, and 56.7% (n=17/30) of the patients had an improvement in PHQ-9 scores at three months. At three months, there was a decline in PHQ-9 scores with a decrease in ASRS scores following treatment. CONCLUSION: Our preliminary results suggest that integrated behavioral health treatment of ADHD using a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions may play a role in improving comorbid depressive symptoms.

Proper treatment of developmental disabilities requires health workers to have adequate knowledge of etiology and referral procedures. There is a dearth of research on knowledge of developmental disabilities among health workers in Ghana. The purpose of this study was to document knowledge about developmental disorders, causes, and referral procedures among health workers. Researchers used a successive free-listing method to interview 37 health workers. Developmental disabilities which present with physical symptoms were the most salient disorders identified among health workers, while learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder were largely overlooked. The most commonly listed developmental disabilities were cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and autism spectrum disorder. Respondents had limited knowledge about the causes of and referral resources for developmental disabilities. Results show the need for continuing medical education, public awareness, and enhanced resources to support the identification and care of children with developmental disabilities in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been consistently demonstrated. However, a specific neuropsychological profile has not yet been established for this disorder, maybe due to the heterogeneity of BPD. The aim of this work is the search for distinct neuropsychological subtypes among patients with BPD and for the association of neuropsychological subgroups with specific clinical characteristics. METHODOLOGY: One hundred fifteen patients with BPD diagnosis received an extensive neuropsychological evaluation assessing attentional, memory and executive functions indexes. For subtyping strategies, a cluster analysis of neuropsychological BPD distribution was performed. Central clinical dimensions of BPD were measured and analysed in relation with the obtained neuropsychological clusters. RESULTS: Two clusters were found: Cluster 1 showed a significantly lower score on the working memory index, and Cluster 2 had significantly worse overall executive performance, response inhibition and planning abilities. Patients in the neurocognitive Cluster 2 showed significantly higher clinical deficits of attention as measured with subscales of the CAARS attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) index (F = 2.549, p < 0.005, d = 11.49). CONCLUSIONS: Two neuropsychological clusters of patients were found in the BPD sample: Cluster 1 patients showed greater impairment in working memory, while Cluster 2 patients had greater deficits of executive functioning, particularly for response inhibition and planning. In addition, BPD patients with greater executive deficits presented greater levels of ADHD clinical features. These findings might also facilitate earlier diagnosis of severe BPD patient profiles and to establish more personalized treatment based on neurocognitive stimulation.
